About North Idaho Road Cams

North Idaho Road Cams is a free, independently operated website that brings together live traffic-camera images and weather information from across North Idaho into one easy-to-scan dashboard. Whether you're heading over Lookout Pass to Montana, driving I-90 between Coeur d'Alene and Wallace, checking for snow on US-95 north of Sandpoint, or just trying to get to work without surprises on Highway 53, we want to help you see the road before you drive it.

Why This Site Exists

North Idaho roads are beautiful and unforgiving in equal measure. Mountain passes ice over without warning, lake-effect snow drops visibility on US-2, and summer wildfire smoke can erase entire valleys. Official traffic-camera feeds exist for most of the major corridors, but they're scattered across half a dozen state-agency websites that weren't designed for quick checks from a phone in your driveway. We pulled the cameras together, added current weather and road-condition context, and made the whole thing work as a one-tap app you can pin to your phone's home screen.

We also write plain-English driving guides to the region's passes, corridors, laws, and seasonal hazards, so the site is useful before you ever look at a camera.

Where the Cameras Come From

Every camera you see on this site is a public feed published by a government transportation agency:

  • Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) — primary source for cameras across I-90, US-95, US-2, US-12, ID-3, ID-53, and most other state-maintained corridors.
  • Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) — cameras near the Idaho/Washington border, including Spokane-area approaches to I-90.
  • Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) — cameras at and near the Idaho/Montana border, especially Lookout Pass and surrounding areas.

We do not operate or maintain the cameras themselves. Camera outages, positioning, and image quality are controlled by the source agencies. When a camera is offline at the source, it will appear offline here too.

Coverage Areas

The site currently covers cameras in and around Coeur d'Alene, Sandpoint, Post Falls, Hayden, Spirit Lake, Athol, Wallace, Cataldo, Saint Maries, Oldtown, Bonners Ferry, the Lookout Pass / Montana border crossing, and the lake corridor along US-95 from the Washington line to the Canadian border.

How We Pay the Bills

This site is free for visitors and we intend to keep it that way. Our costs (hosting, domain, weather data, development time) are funded by two things:

  • Display advertising served by Google AdSense.
  • Affiliate links to Amazon for products useful to North Idaho drivers — dash cams, tire chains, jump starters, portable power, and the like. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you.

We do not sell your personal data, we do not run pop-up ads, and we do not place ads on top of camera images. See our Privacy Policy for details on what is collected and how it is used.
